Learning from Mistakes When Landing Large Fish on a Fly Rod

Top Mistakes
Clackamas County, Oregon

Chasing steelhead and learning from my mistakes.

What I learned:
1. Make sure the fish is tired out, but not exhausted
2. Keep yourself parallel to the fish when possible
3. Avoid holding the middle of the rod (puts pressure on the rod tip), instead hold the butt section
4. Pull the fish across the current, not through it
5. Avoid raising the rod tip when getting close to landing the fish
6. Bend the rod tip to the side when getting ready to land (helps keep the line stay tight to maximize the integrity of the line and cushions sudden jerks which leads to breakage! Exactly what happened in this video)
