How to Set the Hook | Fishing For Beginners

Tips For Beginners
Welcome back to Fish Like Us! Today we’re going to talk about an integral part of catching fish: How to set the hook.

It’s not uncommon to hear statements such as “tight lines” when fishing. But a tight line does you no good if you don’t know how to set the hook. The fish will come to your tight line, taste, and steal your bait in no time. They may even have your hook in their mouth and spit it out. Trust us, it happens.

Learning how to set the hook is important. If you’re not setting the barb, there’s a good chance you’re going to lose the fish. Regardless of hook and fish size, knowing how to set the hook is a requirement of fishing.

Because we teach fishing lessons, fishing for kids, and fishing for beginners, we are often going over this information in person. We realize that although someone may shout “set the hook,” that doesn’t mean you’ll know what that means. So today, we’re going to show you a few examples, and our blog (see link below) will explain what we mean in more detail.

If you’re looking for tips and tricks to increase your catch rate, we highly suggest you refer to our ‘How-to’ playlist and our ‘Fishing for Beginners’ playlist. We go over numerous informational pieces on how to catch bait, tie knots, rig your bait, and set that hook. There are exceptions to every rule, and for this reason, setting the hook won’t always apply to the hook and rig you’re using. But that’s another lesson for another day. If you’re dying to know now, you can call us. We’ll take you out and show you what we mean.
