The “red line” also reveals level of interest a fish has in your lure. If the line is thick with no breaks and across the entire top screen that means the fish will very likely grab the line if you keep the pace at which you’re reeling and luring it. If the red line decreases, it means fish is losing interest. If it thins out very quickly, you should recast.

This fishing minigame is basically a “fight”, with your equipment as weapon. Move your line (control stick) in the direction of fish and stop reeling and reel particularly when there’s no indicator.
