Northern Saskatchewan lies in a state of true wilderness, this is deep, far-flung wilderness as it lies in the northern reaches of Canada and is well off the road system. With our outfitting readied for portaging, we’d start our 14-day whitewater canoe trip down the Porcupine River after a long drive that ended with a 9-hour stretch on a bumpy, gravel road. Finally, a bush plane deposited us near the Northwest Territories border at a remote, fly-in fishing lodge where we began our trip. It was me, my wife Tori and our dog Buck on this adventure and it was one for the books. The Porcupine is an awesome whitewater river which is more like a chain of beautiful lakes that are connected by small sections of whitewater. The weather wasn’t on our side and we had some cold wet days but the scenery was absolutely beautiful and the pike fishing was excellent.

I did this trip in 2016 in between my 75-day stint on History Channel’s ALONE a and my 36-day solo crossing of the Ungava Peninsula earlier that April.
