As a charter captain in Alaska, we often target halibut. Halibut a typically an easy fish to catch. It is similar to shark fishing where you need to get a chum slick going to attract fish. This is done by putting multiple large baits near the bottom while the boat is anchored.
In this video, I show how to rig and bait halibut hooks. These custom rigs work great to catch halibut, lingcod, and rockfish. We often catch large lingcod and yelloweye rockfish while halibut fishing.
The custom rig is made with a 16/0 circle hook, 100-pound mono line, 150-pound gangion line, barrel swivels, and snaps swivels. This is attached to a halibut fishing pile and a Shimano reel.
