Sine-Saloum region in the southwest of Senegal is home to rich and lush mangroves. The mangroves provide a shelter and nutrition for the marine biodiversity, many of which are protected species.

But the marine wildlife of Sine-Saloum have faced a critical threat as Senegal is the world’s third largest consumer of fish, and fishing makes up the livelihood of a third of the population. Senegal established the protected marine zone in 2003, and the result has been nothing short of astonishing.
